Overview

During the Meiji and Taisho eras, many Shinshu-related magazines were launched. There are a considerable number of magazines related to our university alone. Ryukoku University Omiya Library holds many of these valuable magazines. However, the existence of some of these magazines is not well known, and many issues and pages are missing. They are not in excellent condition, and there is a high risk that they will be further damaged if they are made available for viewing in the future.
These magazines are not only valuable historical documents for compiling the university’s history for its 400th anniversary, which is just over a decade away, but are also clearly materials that the university must take great care to preserve for the future.
We aim to create a database of these magazines, reprint some of them, and study the background and intention behind the publication of the magazines. The focus will be on reprinting The Hansei Zasshi (Ōbun Hansei Zasshi, “a magazine in European languages published by the Hansei Society”), a magazine of particular importance to our university.
