Overview

This research aims to clarify the state of children’s programs by Buddhists during the Showa period. Specifically, it will examine the relationships, balance, and priorities amongst three aspects of these programs: religious instruction in childcare, child protection, and youth guidance; educational activities; and social work. In addition, it seeks to reveal the true nature of gender-based divisions of labor and role-sharing among those involved in these activities. Note that activities aimed at children, such as religious instruction and moral training, education, protection, and welfare, are known to have been integrated. Accordingly, the concept of “children’s programs by Buddhists” is deliberately used here as an umbrella term.
